CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

The word “Kuuma” is Finnish for hot. We use electrical Far Infrared panels to heat our classes between 30-36 degrees Celsius. It can be a very sweaty experience (but we provide free towels)! *All of our classes are heated unless it states otherwise.

YIN

Yin Yoga directs the stimulation and stretch to the connective tissues of the body (ligaments, bones & joints). Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. The postures are held from anywhere from 1-10 minutes. Our ligaments, joints and bones respond differently than our muscles. We suggest a balance of both yin/yang energy in your yoga practice.

There is a lot of controversy around whether or not you should practice Yin in a heated room. According to many yin teachers, yin is to be done in a cold or room temperature setting in order to stretch the connective tissues and fascia. We choose to add the benefit of Infrared simply for it’s healing benefits and comforts. For this reason, we always suggest that you practice Yin in the hot room very gently and listen to the feedback of your body. We respect the views of many teachers and often avoid many intense deep and long-held yin postures in the heated room. These classes are very restorative and relaxing and offer the use of props.

HOT YOGA

These classes are Hatha based classes that focus on standing postures and less on transitions between postures (like in a vinyasa flow class). These classes offer alternate ways to enter and exit positions and can be a great place to start if you’re not sure which class to take. Some hot yoga series feature 26 postures, or a series of postures practiced in the same order each time. We make up our own sequence for each class and don’t follow a strict or rigid structure for teaching these classes.

CHROMO YIN

Colour therapy (chromotherapy) is used to bring balance to the mind and body. Colour affects our moods, emotions and state of mind. The colours that we like and dislike say a lot about us. The colours that you choose to wear (to represent yourself) give information about your thoughts, feelings and personality.

Carl Jung said "Colour is the key to the subconscious." Colour helps us discover our beauty, talents and strengths by balancing our energies. Colour therapy can help us release resentment, fear, anger, frustration, self-pity, depression and the past. Yoga works with the body and challenges the mind - and adding colouring can help stimulate the energy centres in your body. The chakra system associates a colour with each energy centre in the body. This class will be very colourful (we use our smart Philips Hue bulbs to create a sensory experience for you).

YIN BEATS

*YIN BEATS is a musically designed yin yoga sequence. The instructor curates a special playlist designed to help you relax and release.

*It is important to note that practicing Yin Yoga in the heat does not enhance the practice in any way. We choose to practice in the heat because of the comfort and relaxation purposes. Keeping this in mind, we challenge you not to push yourself to your edge immediately. Remaining aware of how the heat assists your body in opening and relaxing, it actually makes Yin Yoga easier overall. We don’t do this to cheat, we just really believe in the power and healing properties of our heating system, so we choose to practice this way.

YOGA NIDRA

Yoga Nidra is "Yogic Sleep" --- From alpha, you go into a deep alpha and high theta brain-wave state, the dream state, REM sleep. In theta, your thoughts slow down to 4 to 8 thoughts per second. This is where super learning happens. We will explore the world of intention setting (Sankalpa) and healing our body, mind & spirit from inside the mind. It is more than common to simply fall asleep during this practice. The more often you come, the easier it will become to enter the state between wakefulness and sleeping - called the "hypnogogic state." This is where the magic happens.

vinyasa (Flow)

Vinyasa can mean a lot of things, but it’s literal Sanskrit translation is “to arrange something in a special way.”
Flow is a contemporary term for the style of yoga that never seems to stop. At Kuuma, we go pretty hard on setting you up for success. We do this in a multitude of ways:
 1.    the vibe (lights, heat, music, etc)
2.    comfort & safety (break & hydrate when needed)
3.    the practice (movement & breath)
4.    the rest (stillness and meditation) *this part comes with a cold towel for your forehead*

This mix of breath and movement together bring you to the present moment. We believe that stillness is where the magic happens, and that’s what we’re all about at Kuuma.

MEDITATION

Every day after the lunch time class, around 12:50pm - the hot room turns into a meditation zone. If you came for practice and need to run back to work, you can leave after you’re finished in savasana. We invite you to stay and extend your rest taking a personal mediation. Some days the room becomes a “healing chamber” and healing binaural beats are played while you rest.

12:50-1:10 - you are free to lay, sit, or stretch in a mindfulness meditation.

*You CAN come just for the meditation. Please show up at 12:50 and ring the doorbell.

We find that so much physical movement can dilute the mental benefits of the yoga practice. This class reminds you that this practice is more than just physical.

POWER BEATS

These classes are often (but not always) dedicated to hip-hop/rap music and the volume is often very loud! We use the music to enhance the practice. Teacher wears a mic to amplify their voice. Lyrics may also be explicit!

YIN/yANG FLOW

This class offers you perfect balance. Flow is a very yang/heat building practice and Yin is very cooling and restoring. These classes integrate elements from both an active and heat building practice and a restorative, gentle and slow yin practice. We all have masculine and feminine aspects of self and this practice is about balancing the two in perfect harmony. Starting slow and ending slow with heat and power in the middle is exactly the class you need if you’re feeling out of sorts.

You can read the description for both “Yin” classes and “Hot Yoga” and “Vinyasa (Flow)” classes for further description of the styles of yoga that are offered in this class.

RESTORATIVE

Restorative Yoga is like Yin Yoga - but with added support of props (typically blankets, pillows, bolsters and blocks), and even longer holds. Some postures are held anywhere from 25-45 minutes. We provide props but you are always welcome to bring your own blankets, eye pillows or bolster.

The teacher will help set you up into each posture. It's normal to fall asleep. The rest is very beneficial for your nervous system. So, we encourage you to rest very deeply.

The room will typically be dark, quiet and silent. We ask that you respect silence in the space. You may talk to the instructor at any time if needed.

FRIDAZE (4/20)
SATURDAZE

These classes are meant to activate your imagination. This is a safe 4/20 friendly space designed to offer you a relaxing one-hour journey closer to your true self. Trippy or rhythmic music will be played to help us let go of reality and move deeper into the moving meditation (Fridaze/Saturdaze). These classes are heated to 30 degrees, taught at a slower pace and offer meditation and visualization practices. Smoking cannabis beforehand is optional by "highly" recommended lol.
